Year 5 SJ

Our topic in Year 5 this term is Road Trip Around the World 

 

Topic 

Within the topic we will be focussing on different countries around the world. The children have chosen five countries per class to focus on. In groups, the children will each look at a particular country of their choice, they will learn about their country through the expressive arts, focusing on art, music, dance, drama, film & digital media.

In science, linked to the topic, the children will be studying materials and their properties.

Literacy 

As part of Literacy this term we will be covering a number of writing genres including writing an autobiography, radio broadcast, a letter and a blog. We will be following the writing journey to highlight and learn the features of each of these genres, sticking to our success criteria and linking with our Road Trip Around the World topic. The children will still be involved in daily guided reading sessions too, where they will rotate around reading activities as part of the VIPERS program. Also, we will be having more of a focus on the children’s spellings.  

Maths 

The focus at the start of this term will be graphs and tables, where we will be looking at reading graphs as well as creating our own. We will also be developing our knowledge of angles, temperature, budgeting, measure and problem solving, looking at questions in both numerical and word form, with a focus on real life maths. The children will be taking part in daily Big Maths CLIC sessions and will then have a weekly CLIC and Learn Its test. 

INFORMATION: 

· Water bottles need to be brought to school and taken home daily. 

· Please ensure your children comes to school with suntan lotion applied.

· Children need their own pencil case with the necessary equipment. 

· P.E. will continue to take place weekly on a Thursday. 

· Reading Books – Pupils will be in charge of their own reading books and are expected to bring them back and for to school each day. Pupils will then swap them independently in the school library. (Children will be read with in either a guided reading session or individual reading sessions)

Our topic this term in Year 5 is Wilderness Warriors 

 

Topic 

Within the topic we will be focussing on endangered animals and the rainforest. The children have asked to cover themes such as the world’s most endangered animals, climate change, threatened species, life in the rainforest, deforestation and the oceans. We will endeavour to cover all the subjects the pupils have voiced to find out about and look forward to seeing what wonderful outcomes they produce. 

Linked to the topic the children will be studying the plant life, from the plant reproduction, to looking at the parts of a plant and how they spread their seeds. 

Literacy 

As part of Literacy this term we will be covering a number of writing genres including writing a balanced argument, diary writing and letter writing. We will be following the writing journey to highlight and learn the features of each of these genres, sticking to our success criteria and linking with our Wilderness Warriors topic. The children will still be involved in daily guided reading sessions too, where they will rotate around reading activities as part of the VIPERS program. Also, we will be having more of a focus on the children’s spellings.  

Maths 

The focus at the start of this term will be coordinates, where we will be looking at plotting various vertex within four quadrants, as well as using this knowledge in mapping, linking with our topic. We will also be developing our knowledge of addition and subtraction of money, looking at questions in both numerical and word form, with a focus on real life maths. The children will be taking part in daily Big Maths CLIC sessions and will then have a weekly CLIC and Learn Its test.

Welcome message

 

Mr Joseph, Mrs Torkington and Mrs Spear look forward to sharing things with you throughout the year. Please look out next week for the welcome information for Year 5, it will be posted on this page on Monday 13th September. 

A welcome video will be shared to individual Google Classrooms on Monday 13th September as well, so please look out for this. We will remind the children how to access their new Google Classroom along with the information page sent out to parents via the school office this week. 

For the next few weeks our PE day is Thursday.  Please ensure that your child comes to school in their PE kit on that day.  We will inform you if/ when this day changes.

Year 5 Welcome Presentation 21-22

Our topic in Year 5 this term is Pits and Ponies

Topic

Within the topic we will be focussing on the Victorian era. The children have asked to cover themes such as Queen Victoria, inventions, school life, life down the mines, workhouses and the poor. We have planned to cover all the subjects the pupils have voiced to find out about and look forward to seeing what wonderful outcomes they produce.

Linked to the topic the children will be studying the forces in motion, from the first flight, to the development of transport and how the world had a need for speed.

Literacy

As part of Literacy this term we will be covering a number of writing genres including newspaper report writing, diary writing and letter writing. We will be following the writing journey to highlight and learn the features of each of these genres, sticking to our success criteria and linking with our Pits and Ponies topic. The children will be involved in daily guided reading sessions too, where they will rotate around reading activities as part of the VIPERS program.

Maths

The focus at the start of this term will be place value, where we will be looking at numbers up to six-digits as well as moving onto decimal place numbers, understanding tenths, hundredths and thousandths. We will also be developing our knowledge of column Addition and subtraction, multiplication of 2digit and 3digit numbers as well as learning the bus stop method for division.  The children will be taking part in daily Big Maths ClIC sessions and will then have a weekly CLIC and Learn Its test.
