Summer Term

Y4 Summer Newsletter  

Our topic this term is `If I could Turn Back Time`. 


In our literacy sessions this term our focus will be: reading several texts with a focus on life in the 1950's, 1960's and 1970's including ‘Coming to England’ by Floella Benjamin and biographies of important people within these times.

We will be writing diaries, a biography, scripts and debates. Our Welsh topic is `Chwaraeon/Sports`. 


We will also have weekly: 

Handwriting and punctuation activities. We will continue to focus on the correct use of capital letters, full stops, question marks, exclamation marks and speech marks. 

Spelling - We will use a variety of activities and games when working with spelling lists including topic words, common prefixes and suffixes. See Google Classroom for spelling lists fortnightly.




We will be asking: How can I use data to improve my community? How many ways can I solve a mathematical problem? (Ambitious, Capable Learners)

Our focus this term will be developing problem-solving and reasoning skills: 

  • Using our mathematical skills in a a variety of contexts and everyday situations. 

  • Identifying the appropriate steps and information needed to complete the task or reach a solution. 

  • Thinking carefully about how we present and record our calculations. 

We will also be revising and learning about: properties of 2 and 3D shapes, co-ordinates, perimeter and area of 2-D shapes,  name and describe types of angles. We will be estimating and measuring length, capacity, mass, temperature and time.



Within our `If I could Turn Back Time `topic we will be: 

We will be asking: Where do people in my community come from? What do I know about their cultures? How has my community changed from the past to present?  (Ethical informed citizens)

  • Learning about how identity and culture are formed, as well as develop an understanding that injustice and inequality exist in societies. 

  • We will learn about and describe the impact of other cultures on communities and how they have changed over time.

  • We will be experiencing the dance, music and food of other periods in history, as well as cultures.

  •  We will use our Expressive Art skills to create Pop Art, our own dances from the 1950's and 60's as well as working with special visitors on our music and guitar skills.

We will be asking: How can I be more independent? How can I improve my learning?  (Healthy, confident individuals)

We will be asking : How can my ideas create something purposeful for others? How will collaboration help me to think creatively? (Enterprising, Creative contributors)

We will use our STEM skills to explore how can we budget for, create, market and sell products as part of an Enterprise Project `Glorious Gardens`.


How you can help your child: 

Please help your child to learn their 3 – 7 multiplication tables.  

Encourage your child to read for at least 10 minutes every day, revise their spelling word lists and listen to them reading twice a week. 

Help your child to learn to tell the time using an analogue and digital clock face. Ask time/duration questions. Try using money with them, asking them to calculate amounts of change when purchasing items.

Useful Information 

PE: Outdoor Games  - Monday, Yoga - Wednesday, Indoor PE - Thursday. Your child can wear their PE kit to school on those days.

Your child will need their own pencil case with a pen/pencil/rubber and colouring pencils/pens. 

Please label all belongings clearly. Your child will need a water bottle every day. Please wash it daily.

We regularly post on Google Classroom so please check it weekly.

Home Learning for any pupil isolating will also be provided in assignments on Google Classroom.
