Y4 Spring Newsletter  

Our topic this term is `Guardians of the Galaxy`. 

Literacy 

In our literacy sessions this term our focus will be poetry, non-chronological reports and newspaper writing.

Our class novel is ‘How to be an Eco-Hero - Guardians of the Planet`. We will be reading this as part of our whole class reading sessions and completing various activities to develop our VIPERS skills.  

Our Welsh topic is `Y Tywydd`. We will be creating weather forecasts as well as writing books for younger audiences.

We will also have weekly: 

Handwriting – recapping correct letter formation/orientation and position (accurate ascenders and descenders). We will also continue introducing correct letter joins. 

Spelling - we will use a variety of activities and games when working with spelling lists including topic words, common prefixes and suffixes. 

Punctuation - we will continue to focus on the correct use of capital letters, full stops, question marks, exclamation marks and speech marks.  

 

Numeracy 

Our focus this term will be developing problem-solving and reasoning skills: 

  • Using our mathematical skills in a a variety of contexts and everyday situations. 

  • Identifying the appropriate steps and information needed to complete the task or reach a solution. 

  • Thinking carefully about how we present and record our calculations. 

We will also be revising and learning: 

  • Using mental strategies to recall multiplication tables for 2, 3, 4, 5, 6 and 10 and use to solve division problems. 

  • Using mental strategies to multiply and divide 2-digit numbers by a single digit number 

  • Telling the time to the nearest minute on clocks. 

  • Representing data using lists, tally charts, tables and diagrams and bar charts and bar line graphs labelled in 2s, 5s and 10s. Reading and interpret information accurately.

 

Other Curriculum Areas

Within our `Guardians of the Galaxy `topic we will be: 

  • Learning about how we can become guardians of our locality, recycling in our homes and how to promote sustainability.

  • We will learn about and describe the impact of human beings on our planet. What is our eco-footprint?

  • We will use our STEM skills to explore how we recycle and how those materials change. We will explore how our planet provides natural materials and they are used to be useful to us.

  •  We will use our art and design skills to create art using recycled materials. We will reflect upon how artists have achieved effects or communicated moods, emotions and ideas in their work.

  •  

How you can help your child: 

Please help your child to learn their 3 – 7 multiplication tables.  

Encourage your child to read for at least 10 minutes every day and listen to them reading twice a week. 

Help your child to learn to tell the time using an analogue and digital clock face. Ask time/duration questions. Try using money with them, asking them to calculate amounts of change when purchasing items.

Useful Information 

PE: Outdoor Games  - Monday, Yoga - Wednesday, Indoor PE - Thursday. Your child can wear their PE kit to school on those days.

Your child will need their own pencil case with a pen/pencil/rubber and colouring pencils/pens. 

Please label all belongings clearly. Your child will need a water bottle every day. Please wash it daily.

We regularly post on Google Classroom so please check it weekly.

Home Learning for any pupil isolating will also be provided in assignments on Google Classroom.
