This term our topic is ‘Fire! Fire!”
In literacy, we will be reading lots of stories and non-fiction books about dragons, castles, volcanoes, kings and queens. We will focus on writing simple sentences, forming our letters correctly and using sentence punctuation. We will be using our sounds to help us spell. We will write lists and labels as well as some poems. We will use our oracy skills to recount simple stories and use our role play area to make them come alive!
In numeracy, we will be counting forwards and backwards. We will compare and order numbers and count sets of objects. We will practise our number bonds to ten and count in steps of 2s, 5s and 10s and from different starting points. We will apply our knowledge to solve problems involving number, shape and pattern both in our focus tasks and in our independent learning.
Our topic work will help us answer the question: ‘Are dragons real?’ as we meet and handle some real life reptiles. We will research where real life dragons come from and how their habitat helps them survive. We will pack a suitcase for an expedition to observe and explore lizards in their natural environment. We will also learn about castles, people that live in them and their roles. We will find out about castles in Wales.
The children will lead the learning about ‘Fire! Fire!’ Who knows where their interests will lead us!
Water bottles should come to school every day – please label with your child’s name
Stationary in pencil cases should follow the list that Mr Stroud sent out.
PE day is currently each Wednesday and your child should come dressed in their kit on this day.
All reading books and records should return to school each week by Tuesday (due to COVID quarantine) and your child will bring a new book home after they have read in class with an adult. Key words will be tested and replaced as and when needed. Please practise, practise, practise makes PROGRESS!
There are no trips planned currently – we'll let you know!
We are encouraging independence in our Year 1 classes – please help your child to be responsible for their belongings and look after our classroom resources.
We have loved seeing the children settle in well so far!
