MAES YR HAUL WINS PRESTIGIOUS AWARD!
On Wednesday, February 23rd 2  pupils from last year’s year 6 represented the whole class and the school at the First Light awards ceremony at the Odeon, Leicester Square, London. In the presence of Sir Ian Macellan, Colin Salmon and Amma Ashanti to name but a few, the school’s animation “Colour Crazy“ was shown as a nominated winner out of over 200 films in the animation section. There was great excitement when the school was announced as winner in the section and Hannah Fry and William Ash made very professional acceptance speeches from the stage in the full glare of the media spotlight! Hannah and William were later taxied to Broadcasting House where BBC radio Wales hired a studio to interview them

Much excitement had been generated by the interest of BBC Wales in the awards and the interview with 7 of the children involved which was broadcast on Tuesday 22nd February.

The successful development of the animation skills of the pupils was due to the support and guidance from professional animators Cinetig based in Cardiff, Jane and Leonie worked consistently and patiently with the pupils over a period of a term. They were also helped in the beginning by Charline of Celtic Education.

The school is now the proud owner of a beautiful glass award which has pride of place in the foyer and there will be an “Oscars party” for all those involved at the end of term.

A Sad Farewell
Maes Yr Haul held a special assembly to say a big thank you to one of the original members of staff at the school. Our cook Ceri Terry has been successful in obtaining a promotion within BCBC kitchen staff team. We all had tears in our eyes as we said, ‘Goodbye Ceri and Good Luck with the future!’

Babies
It’s not just the staff of Maes Yr Haul Primary School that work hard. The new additions to Miss Thompson, Mrs Garland and Mrs Mawer’s families look like they’ve been hard at it too! Isobel May, Lewis Evan and Ethan Shay are Maes Yr Haul’s 2004 babies… …look out for baby Keirnan arriving soon after Christmas!

A Present for the Baby
The Early Years department worked together with the Sunshine Room to put on an ambitious nativity performance this Christmas.  Staff and parents were thrilled to see pupils aged from 3 to 5 years take part in the wonderful presentation.  ‘A Present for the Baby’ reminded us that, ‘the size or cost of a gift is not important, but it’s the love in our hearts that makes people happy!’

Childrens’ Entertainment
On the last week of the winter term, Francis Maxi came into the school to entertain the children. The children thoroughly enjoyed this experience and took part with great enthusiasm.

Karaoke
Mrs Mawer helped the PFA arrange a Karaoke Party and Quiz Night to help raise money for the forthcoming Maes Yr Haul Pantomime.  Before the big night the boys in the Sunshine Room showed everyone they really were ‘Simply the Best!’

Fundraising
This term we have worked hard in the Sunshine Room raising funds for our school, and pupils less fortunate than ourselves.  In October we spent money at the school ‘Bring & Buy’ sale to help build a school for students in Nepal. We enjoyed helping others, and playing with our new toys!

Road safety Competition
The school council have discussed the traffic situation at the school gate and have decided to hold a competition for all pupils. All pupils are invited to design a road safety poster which specifically addresses the issues at the school gate, such as crossing the road and parking safely or encouraging more families to walk to school. The Local Road Safety officer in conjunction with the school council will judge the competition, and there will be prizes for the best poster at KS1 and KS2. Posters can be of any size and can use any media.
