World Book Day 2004
We celebrated “
World Book Day” in style!  Pupils and staff members dressed up as characters from the books they were reading in class.  In the afternoon, teachers swapped classes to read stories to different classes.  We all enjoyed the day and learned lots about different characters and story plots.

Early Morning Revision Club
Year 6 pupils have recently started to attend an early morning revision club to help them prepare for the forthcoming
Key Stage 2 National Tests.  We are very grateful to Mrs. Fry, Mrs. Miller, Mrs. Jones and Mrs. Maughan for their help in providing breakfasts for the pupils.

Year 2 Design Technology Project
Year 2 pupils are really busy at the moment, designing and
making puppets.  They have been working hard to cut their designs out of card to make templates and sew pieces of cloth together to make these wonderful puppets.  Miss Roberts would like to thank all the parents who have helped her make this project such a success.

Famous French Chef Visits School on “Pancake Day”
We were extremely lucky to receive a visit from Monsieur Arvee on
Pancake Day.  The chef (who clearly enjoys sampling lots of food!) talked to us about the origins of Pancake Day and explained the importance of personal hygiene when cooking. His obvious Maesteg accent was a bit confusing however!

Pupil Wins Bridge FM Prize
One of our Junior pupils recently won a prize in a local radio station competition.  Representatives visited Maes yr Haul Primary School and presented the lucky pupil with a fantastic tee-shirt.
Bridge FM also kindly provided over 60 pancakes to pupils in Year 5 and 6.

Pupils Participate In Celtic Music Festival
Recently, pupils from Class Taylor participated in an international Celtic music festival in Porthcawl.  Groups from Wales, Ireland and Scotland took part in this exciting event. Our pupils provided a traditional folk dance which was well received by the large crowd at the event.  We would like to thank Mrs. Taylor and Mel Evans for their help.

Traditional Dress For Our St. David’s Day Eisteddfod
The school will be celebrating its annual St. David’s Day competition on Monday 1st March. Pupils are encouraged to dress in traditional Welsh dress (see right). As we would like our pupils to wear traditional costume, we would ask parents not to dress their children in Welsh football/rugby shirts. For further info, click
HERE.

Cardiff City Football Club Schools Tournament
The school football squad recently participated in a soccer tournament organised by Cardiff City Football Club.  Although we didn’t win a match, we really enjoyed the experience of playing against other schools. We are deeply indebted to Mr. Fry and Mr. Hier for their help in coaching our school football teams.

TESCO Donate £500 To Create An “East Meets West” Garden
We are extremely grateful to
TESCO for their kind donation of £500 towards school funds. We intend to use the money to fund the creation of a garden influenced by traditional Japanese horticulture. We would like to welcome TESCO to our community and hope that this will be the start of a great relationship!

Starlab Visits Maes yr Haul Primary School
We were delighted to welcome Neil Hughes (Director of the
Starlab Program) to our school this week.  Year 5 and 6 pupils were treated to a fantastic inter-stellar spectacle within Starlab - an inflatable planetarium.  We leaned about stars and NASA’s recent journey to Mars.

Reception Class Visit Bridgend Fire Station
Our Reception pupils recently visited Bridgend Fire Station as part of their “Jobs and People in the Community” work. They talked to firefighters and were allowed to use the water hoses. The highlight of the day was a trip around the block in a fire engine. Miss Evans and Miss Thompson would like to thank the firefighters for their help.

First Light Project
Maes yr Haul Primary School was the sole Welsh primary school recipient of the new
First Light film making grant.  The pupils will be working with Charline Evans of EduWales and Jane Hubbard of Cinetig to produce a 3-minute animated film.  We would also like to acknowledge the support of Mr. Les Howells (BCBC Education IT).

iShine Presentation
This week, 3 Year 6 students were invited to attend a presentation award ceremony at the University of Glamorgan in recognition of their contribution to the iShine Project.  They received a certificate from Jane Davison AM (Minister for Education) and were congratulated by Mr. Graham Avery (Assistant Director) on their work (see photo).

Porthcawl Comprehensive School Drama Group Visit
We were delighted recently to welcome drama students from Porthcawl Comprehensive School to our school.  The students presented a poetic version of a traditional pantomime and talked with our pupils about performance skills. They told us about their studies and provided an insight into drama studies.

After School Clubs
We are very proud to offer 11 extra-curricular clubs at the school.  We are deeply indebted to our staff and parents who donate their time so willingly.  If you would like to find out more about our extra-curricular programme, take a look at
club timetable or contact Mrs. Powell on (01656) 672900.

Community Education Programme
We currently run 6 community education courses at the school.  These include CLAIT IT classes, digital imaging courses, family literacy sessions and introduction to computing events.  If you are interested in either attending or providing a course, please contact
Mr. Harvey for further details.

Basic Skills Presentation Ceremony
We were delighted to welcome Cllr. Edith Hughes (BCBC Education Committee), Mr. Roger Hampton (Principal of Bridgend College) and Mr. Les Phillips (School Development Officer) to our recent Year 3/4 Assembly.  This highly successful venture was coordinated by Mrs. Shan Clark and involved over 25 of our parents.

Fitness Day
We are very grateful to Miss Roberts (PE Coordinator) for her efforts in organising our recent “Fitness Day”.  The day was a resounding success with every pupil participating in a variety of healthy activities.  Many thanks to everyone who donated money - over £1100 was raised!

Time Capsule
As part of our history work, we decided to fill a “time capsule” with information about our school and bury it in our school grounds in order to provide future generations with data from the present. Cllr. Gwen Bradford, one of our governors, helped us to bury the aluminium case and plant a ‘Monkey Puzzle’ tree - a symbol of our growth.

Video Conferencing with Australia
This term, Year 6 pupils have been involved in a global video editing project with schools from the Bathurst District in Australia. We took part in an early morning video conferencing event where we talked to our partners in New South Wales. Even our class hamster, Cocoa, joined in the fun to become the world’s first VidCon rodent!

Visit of the Mari Lwyd
Once again, we are very grateful to Mr. Roger Turner for his help in bringing the
Mari Lwyd to our school as part of our Christmas celebrations.  The Mari Lwyd was the star attraction at our annual PFA Christmas Fete.  We are delighted to report that due to hard work of our PFA and generosity of our parents, over £800 was raised.

NPQH Award
We consider the professional development of staff to be a very important part of school life.  Recently, Mr. Harvey completed a course in school leadership and was awarded the NPQH qualification.  Mr. Harvey was presented with his certificate by Jane Davidson, Minister for Education, in Cardiff.

Children in Need
We celebrated the Children in Need event in style! We held a “Non-Uniform Day” for pupils and staff and organised a ‘Bring and Buy’ sale. Even Mrs. Mahoney joined in the fun by dressing up as a schoolgirl!  We raised over £220 for charity and we all had a great time!

Sewing Club
We are very grateful to Mrs. Grubb for running an after-school sewing club.  Mrs. Grubb, who is one of our parent governors, organises a weekly crafts club which is regularly attended by over 15 pupils.  The group has already made some fantastic pieces and the club is thoroughly enjoyed by all who attend.
