Miss James’ Last Day We were very sorry to say, “Goodbye!” to Miss James last week. Miss James has decided to leave us to look after her new son. As an original team member she will be sorely missed although we wish her well in her new home and in her new career. Miss James kindly donated an apple tree to the school to remind us of her.

Japanese Spelling Test This week, Year 6 pupils sat a Japanese spelling test. We learned the Japanese symbols for parts of the body and practised saying the words. We were lucky that two of our pupils are fluent in Japanese! Parents joined us for the test and we marked eachother’s papers. Many thanks to everyone who joined in.

Harvest Assembly (Class Davies) Class Davies provided another fantastic assembly this week. Year 2 pupils sang Harvest songs and performed “The Parable of the Sower”. We were delighted with the pupils’ enthusiasm and musical ability. Many thanks to Mr. Davies, Miss Jones and Heather Barton-Jones for their contributions to the assembly.

Caring For Animals Miss Biston brought her tortoise into school this week and talked to us about caring for animals. She told us about her tortoise’s favourite foods and gave us tips on how to care for animals. We were lucky to catch the tortoise awake as he will soon be going into hibernation!

Farewell Aunty Michelle! Aunty Michelle put on her lunchtime supervisor’s apron for the last time this week. Michelle Williams, one of our original staff members, has decided to leave our team to concentrate on her new business venture (see below). We would like to thank Michelle for all her hard work and wish her every success for the future!

PFA Images Exhibition We held an exhibition of our pupils’ artwork this week to share our work with the community and raise funds for the Parents and Friends Association. Michelle Williams, former employee of the school, kindly donated a sizeable amount of her profits to the school fund. Please contact Sue Powell on 672900 for more details.

Netball Tournament On Sunday 19th October, our netball team, coached by Miss Roberts, participated in a friendly tournament at Bridgend Recreation Centre. We played really well against some excellent opposition and enjoyed the experienced of playing in the tournament. Many thanks to Miss Roberts for giving up her own time to organise the squad.

Football Tournament In October, we played host to a football tournament organised by Cardiff City Football Club. We really enjoyed participating in all the games and would like to say a big thank you to the other schools who took part. Many thanks also to Jamie and Mark of Cardiff CFC who made the event so successful.

Rainforest Roadshow Key Stage 2 pupils enjoyed a wonderful presentation from Dave Shaw, the Naturalist & Ecotainer. Dave visited our school to talk about ecological issues and show us a variety of unusual creatures. We really enjoyed his entertaining and informative style. Please click HERE to visit his website.

Food Aid Event Aunty Chris organised a charity event to coincide with the Food Aid event. The kitchen staff brought in homemade cakes and sold them to pupils and staff for a small donation towards the fund. The cakes were (as usual) delicious!

Romeo & Juliet Year 6 performed a musical based on Shakespeare’s “Romeo & Juliet”. This formed part of this term’s literacy work. The pupils investigated the differences between the language Shakespeare used and the way we speak today. Year 6 pupils researched the characters and learned about plot and sub-plot.

EBP / Bayer Bungalow Class Hixson visited the Bayer Bungalow during October. We learned about recycling and enrgy efficiency. We really enjoyed our visit and would like to thank EBP and Bayer for their help. Four pupils were presented with certifcates for answering questions in the quiz.

Ogmore Residential Centre Art Course During October, a group of 22 pupils participated in an art course organised by the Ogmore Centre Trust. Miss Roberts, the school’s art coordinator, also attended the course. The children really enjoyed the activities at Ogmore and, despite not getting much sleep (!), they produced some fantastic pieces of artwork.

Indian Paper Art Mr. Rai came to our school to demonstrate the art of Indian paper folding. We were astonished by the intricate designs and we are now learning how to make our own religious festival decorations. Year 6 pupils investigated a variety of paper folding techniques as part of their research into Islam.

Welsh Brass Trio The Welsh Brass Trio visited our school last week. They talked about brass instruments and played lots of music. The school currently offers brass tuition. Ring Mrs. Powell for further details.

New Technologies The school has invested heavily in a variety of cutting edge technologies. In September, interactive whiteboards were installed in eight rooms. Here, Miss Roberts uses her interactive whiteboard to present a Year 2 literacy lesson . If you would like to see an interactive whiteboard in action please see Mr. Harvey for a demonstration.

Scientific Investigations We believe strongly in the importance of investigative activities. Here, a group of Year 6 pupils shows us the results of their “Healthy Hands” investigation. Tesco Computer Vouchers Many thanks to everybody who contributed to our Tesco “Computers for Schools” collection. This year we received over 27,000 vouchers; enough to purchase a new laptop and a variety of software packages. Here, Mrs. Lewis uses last year’s Tesco computer with a group of pupils.

Science Club Mrs. Taylor (Science Coordinator) and Mrs. Garland (KS1 Science Club leader) accepted the certificates on behalf of the school. The school would also like to thank Mrs. Taylor, Mrs. Garland and Mr. Davies who give up their own time to run lunchtime and after-school science clubs.

Cardiff City Football Training Geraint Twose and Julian Symes from Cardiff City Football Club joined us this week to coach our budding professional footballers. They will be visiting Maes yr Haul for the next 8 weeks, working with pupils from Year 6. A football festival has been organised for the Summer Term.

Bad Hair Day Pupils from the school raised over £150 during this year’s Comic Relief event. On Friday 14th March, pupils and staff radically altered their hairstyles for the day. Later, the Parents and Friends Association organised a quiz night which also raised over £100 for worthy causes. Many thanks to all those who attended the event.
