End of the Term!!

Wow! What an exciting first term we have had!

This half term the children have been busy rehearsing for our Christmas concert. Our concert this year was ‘It’s A Party!’. The children worked so hard learning their lines, songs and even dance routines! I hope you agree and you all enjoyed. Many thanks to you all who helped with their costumes and helping learn their lines. It is very much appreciated and they all looked and sounded fantastic!

We carried on with our topic this term of ‘Heroes and Villains’. We have been busy learning all about parts of the castle, life inside the castle and knights! We have been busy making helmets, shields, castle pencil pots and we even made a large model castle so our toy knights could play in! We also visited Cardiff Castle where the children had a tour of the apartments, went up the keep and tried on armour! Thank you to all the parents who offered their help and to those who came with us! The children thoroughly enjoyed themselves!

Towards the end of the term the children have also been busy making lots of Christmas goodies such as reindeer cards, calendars, tree decorations and still carrying on with their maths and literacy! They were a very busy bunch! As a Christmas treat they also went to the Pantomime in Porthcawl to see ‘Cinderella’. The children enjoyed it and there were a few sore throats afterwards with all the shouting, teachers included!

After such a busy term, I think that we are all ready for a nice relaxing break over Christmas! On behalf of myself and Mrs Shepherd have a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year! Looking forward to hearing all about the children’s lovely Christmas’ in January!

Heroes and Villains

The first half term is over already! And hasn’t it flown by! Year One’s topic this term is ‘Heroes and Villains’. Thank you to all the children who have brought in items and books about knights, castles, princesses they are very much appreciated and the children have enjoyed looking at them.

The children have really loved this topic so far and we have learnt about the parts of the castles, what knights wear and what is inside a castle and how it is different from our homes today. We have also been looking at materials used in a castle. We have read the story of ‘Jack and the Beanstalk’ and completed lots of fun activities in the class relating to the story! The favourite thing about our topic is the castle the children can play in. The children have been dressing up as a knight, king or princess! Thank you to the children who have lent us costumes for the castle! The children love them!

Ahoy there matey!

Pirates have taken over our class this term; we have our very own pirate ship and were lucky enough to have a visit from a good pirate! We had the chance to ask the pirate questions, and then we took it in turns to be the pirates! We have made pirate flags, and even treasure maps! Thankfully the boys and girls have found the hidden treasure!

We also enjoyed growing our own potatoes. Miss Biston helped us to plant, water, wash and then eat the delicious vegetable! We had to eat the potatoes quick before the pirates came back!

What a busy term! We have been learning about sea creatures and what we can find at the seaside. We were also lucky enough to have a visit from a poet called Kate who brought in lots of unusual objects from the seaside and helped us to think of words to describe the sea. We then created poems based on the words.

We all had a wonderful day on our school trip to the seaside! We found lots of sea creatures and even had a sandcastle competition! Thank goodness the rain stayed away!
We hope you all have a wonderful summer holiday, and fingers crossed the weather is kind!

Planting Vegetables

As part of our Spring topic 'Fruit and Vegetables', the children decided they would like to plant their own vegetables outside our classrom. So far we have planted potatoes and intend to plant more seaonal vegetables later this week. We would be very grateful of any unwanted seeds/bulbs that anyone happens to have at home.
After planting potatoes the children decided they would like to make leek and potato soup in the classroom. They enjoyed scrubbing and peeling the potatoes ready to go into the saucepan with the leeks and definitely liked sampling their own cooking.

Eisteddfod

We celebrated St Davids day with an Eisteddfod! The children came to school dressed in their house colours ready to perform and win points for their house. Lots of singing and poetry recitals in both English and Welsh took place and the children thoroughly enjoyed trying to make their performance stand out to the judges!
All the children performed brilliantly in our celebration and the atmosphere was very much enjoyed by all the staff and the children.

Visit from PC Stewart

PC Stewart visited our class to discuss the importance of the Police in keeping us safe. He explained the significance of their uniform and the different duties that Police officers carry out. He brought his friendly dragon Tarrion to meet us and has promised to come back soon.

Fire Fighter Visit

As part of our ‘People Who Help Us’ topic we were lucky enough to have had a visit from the local fire fighters. The children thoroughly enjoyed this visit and were given the opportunity to sit inside the fire engine and had some fun spraying water through the hose. We learnt an important rhyme to help keep us safe from fire. The fire fighters dressed Mrs White in their uniform but she decided she was definitely not brave enough to carry out their job. A special thank you from all the Reception children and staff must go to Mrs Barnett!

Molly the Rabbit

We had a lovely surprise one morning when we came into school and found that Molly our Rabbit had had babies during the night! The kittens were kept in school with their mum whilst they grew bigger and bigger. The children loved taking good care of them and watching them play. When the kittens were strong enough to be re-homed they were lucky enough to go in pairs. Two now live with Miss Chappell and the final 2 with Mrs O’Roche as house rabbits.
