'Spring has Sprung!'

What a busy term we've had! We've been talking about 'Wonderful Wales' and had great fun during our Foundation Phase Eisteddfod. We've listened to traditional Welsh myths and legends, learned about our emblems and flag, learned Welsh poems and songs and danced traditional Welsh folk dances.

We had great fun learning about British garden birds as we took part in the RSPB Big Schools Garden Birdwatch. We also designed group bird houses and created pastel drawings and poems using our observation and descriptive writing skills.

On Tuesday afternoons we have begun Kerb Craft and are having fun learning how to be safe when out and about and crossing the road.

After Miss Evans and Miss Roberts-Morgan visited Tanzania, we had a Tanzania week in school which ended with our class assembly.

We had an exciting birthday week as we celebrated Maes yr Hauls 10th birthday. We thought about our 10 magic moments at Maes yr Haul, wrote acrostic poems, listed our Maes yr Haul top 10 and made party decorations. The best bit was sharing our classroom and activities with mums and dads and our big Year 2 party in the afternoon!

We are all looking forward to being 'Time Travellers' next term!
Happy Easter!

Gunpowder, treason and plot!

During our Gunpowder Plot theme week, pupils learned all about Guy Fawkes and the plotters and the reason we celebrate Bonfire Night on the 5th November every year. Throughout the week pupils made wanted posters for Guy Fawkes, wrote newspaper articles, firework poems, learned about the firework code and fire safety, made a bonfire collage, sparklers and chocolate apples. We even 'won' a million pounds playing a gunpowder plot theme 'Who wants to be a millionaire'!

Sut mae'r tywydd heddiw?

We would like to put together a weather box in our 'Cwtch Cymraeg' where the children can dress up in appropriate clothing while asking and answering the question 'Sut mae'r tywydd heddiw?' We would be grateful for any sunhats, bobble hats, gloves, scarves, sunglasses, etc that you would like to donate. Diolch yn fawr!

Don't Touch But Tell

PC Stewart visited our class this week to talk to us about lost property. We also sang a song for Tarian the dragon icon_lol

News items included information about how baby gorillas are looked after, what gorillas like to do, why gorillas are under threat and how we can help them. Some also included unusual gorilla facts. Did you know gorillas build a new nest to sleep in every night!? icon_surprised

'Smarter than the Average Bear'

As a part of National Schools Film Week pupils enjoyed a trip to the cinema to watch "Yogi Bear." Before going to the cinema pupils learned about Yellowstone National Park and the jobs and responsibilities the Park Rangers undertake. We are now looking forward to making our own 'documentaries' as Danger Rangers, just as they do in the film!

Showtime!

Pupils have enjoyed two performances this term so far! The Welsh Brass Trio visitied and performed a number of musical items for the children, as well as talking to them about the instuments they were playing. Some lucky children also got to have a go at playing various instruments themselves! Pupils have also enjoyed a performance of "The Hare and the Tortoise" by the Pandemonium Theatre Group.

Parents Evening Autumn Term

Our parents are all invited to visit our class Tuesday 4th October between 3:40pm - 6:00pm. Bring your child along and they can be your guide around our class! We look forward to sharing all our news with you! icon_smile

"Tiger, Tiger, Burning Bright"

During our first "Thinking Thursday" session the children chose to learn more about the Bengal Tiger. They wanted to know,
Why is the Bengal Tiger endangered?
Where does the Bengal Tiger live?
What does a Bengal Tiger eat?
How can we help the Bengal Tiger?
The children thought of lots of activities to complete in order to find the answers to their questions including looking through information books, researching facts using the internet, a tiger hunt, making Bengal Tiger fact sheets and using maps and globes to find the continent of Asia. They also used their creative talents to make a 3D jungle, Bengal Tiger biscuits, tiger masks and tiger pictures.

Step Back in Time!

We took a step back in time as we visited the Gwalia Stores at St. Fagans. Mrs Roberts the shop was there to meet us and help us with our shopping. We bought loose tea which she keeps in the tea bins, weighs out using the weighing scales and puts into a purple bag. She also helped us to buy coffee using the coffee grinder and helped us buy sugar, which Mr Evans the shop owner puts into a blue bag because it makes the sugar look whiter. We also bought biscuits from the biscuit counter and saved some money by buying the broken ones. We also bought an egg from the cold counter which is made of marble. Do you know why the cold counter is made of marble? Next she helped us buy a hot water bottle that was made of china. She told us she wraps her hot water bottle in a blanket to go to bed so she doesn't hurt her toes in the night! She also showed us the other things we could buy like Tommy Tins and baby bottles. Did you know that baby bottles used to be made of glass? When we had finished our shopping we didn't have enough money to pay so she said we could pay at the end of the week and so we didn't have to carry it home she would give it to Tommy the delivery boy to bring to our home on his delivery bike. We learned lots of information about how people used to shop in the past!

"Welcome Home Mummy Owl"

After reading "The Owl Babies" the children thought of all the things they would like to learn about owls. These included learning owl facts and writing their own fact sheets, learning and ordering the life cycle of a barn owl and learning about the food chain of an owl. The children also wrote conversations for "The Owl Babies" characters using speech bubbles and speech marks and made Valentine cards using owl designs. To end our owl theme the children decided to plan and have a welcome home party for mummy owl. They wrote invitations, made welcome home banners and cards and made a worm cake to eat! The children had a great time dancing and playing party games, which included 'Put the beak on the owl', although some missed and put the beak on each other! icon_lol

Danger Rangers visit Bristol Zoo

On Wednesday 8th December 2010, Class Evans' Danger Rangers visited Bristol Zoo in search of endangered animals. They were successful in finding lions, seals, spiders, snakes, reptiles, a gorilla and penguins. They also caught a glimpse of the rare creature that only ventures out once a year. Can you guess what they saw? icon_wink
