Happy Holidays!

What a busy term it has been! We have really enjoyed our topics “Wonderful Wales” and “Me and My Shadow”. We began the term with our first topic “Wonderful Wales”, which involved learning all about our country and lots of activities and competitions leading up to our Eisteddfod. We learnt about things that Wales is well known for, such as rugby, St. David and Welsh cakes. We wrote a recipe of how to make Welsh cakes and followed this to make them…. They were delicious!

We had a great time celebrating Chinese New Year. We made Chinese tangrams, a dragon mask, lanterns and did some Chinese writing. In the afternoon we celebrated with a party and Chinese food- yummy!

After half term, we began our topic of “Me and My Shadow”. This involved learning all about ourselves and sources of light. We went on a walk around the school, searching for sources of light. We also completed sorting activities of sources and non-sources of light and used the outside area to search for shadows. We had lots of fun learning about ourselves and what keeps us healthy. We made fruit smoothies and enjoyed reading the story of “Oliver’s Fruit Salad”. In Welsh, we learnt the names of fruit and which is our favourite one. We used the 2Simple program on the computer to make a pictogram of our favourite fruits. We talked about what makes us unique and wrote about this. We learnt about different parts of the body and used the outside area to draw around each other and label. We enjoyed learning about healthy and unhealthy foods and we were able to sort these and design our own healthy plate.

We had a great week celebrating Maes Yr Haul’s 10th birthday. We did lots of activities such as decorating number 10’s, making birthday cards and mosaics. We were very excited when the hot air balloon visited Maes Yr Haul and learnt lots about them! We enjoyed having parents, governors and visitors come to our class at the end of the week to share our learning. We had a party in class to end the celebrations on the Friday afternoon.

We were very busy in the weeks leading up to Easter. Reception children did a super job in their Easter bonnet parade and looked beautiful in their bonnets! We read the Easter story and made our own Easter scene. We also made an Easter bunny and went on an Easter egg hunt!

We hope you have an egg-cellent Easter! icon_lol

Nadolig Llawen!

Well our first term in school has been a busy, but certainly an enjoyable one! We were very busy this half term preparing for Christmas. Reception put on a super performance of “The Fairytale Land Nativity”, likewise did Year One with their Christmas concert “It’s A Party!” The children worked so hard and it certainly paid off!!! Many thanks Mums and Dads for helping your child with their costumes and learning their lines. They all looked fantastic and I am sure you all enjoyed!

We continued with our topic of “Heroes and Villains” and enjoyed our school trip to Cardiff Castle. It was a busy and fun packed day! We had a tour of the castle, looked at the different types of armour and climbed the steps to the keep. To celebrate the end of the topic, we had a medieval banquet in class where we wore our beautiful crowns that we had made and feasted on lots of yummy food!

We were very busy and excitable in the run up to Christmas. We made advent calendars, stockings and special reindeer dust ready for Christmas Eve. Reception children enjoyed their school trip to Greenmeadow Farm where they met Santa and Year One children had a great time at the pantomime production of “Cinderella”!

After such a busy term, we certainly are ready for a relaxing break over Christmas! We cannot wait to hear the boys and girls news when they return to school! I would like to take this opportunity to wish you a very Merry Christmas. See you next year! icon_lol

What a busy term so far!!!

We have been busy in our first half term in Dosbarth Evans! We are now familiar with our new class, know where things are kept and have a good understanding of our class rules.

Our topic is ‘Heroes and Villains’ and we have been focusing on the story of ‘Jack and the beanstalk’. We made our own pictures using the 2Simple computer program and also using paint. We have been trying very hard with our writing, making sure we remember all the important things that are needed when writing a sentence. Every week, we have been focusing on a letter for our handwriting. We thoroughly enjoy using the playdoh and shaving foam to help us practise this.

We have enjoyed playing with lots of different toys in class, such as the construction toys, puzzles and puppets. We also enjoy using our role-play area- the kitchen. Many thanks to those who donated items for our kitchen.

In P.E, we have been working hard over the weeks to make a dance to retell the story of Jack and the beanstalk. It was great to see the finished dance and watch each others’ performances!

We were lucky enough to have a visit from the Welsh Brass Trio. They played lots of different songs for us and some of us were lucky enough to play some of the instruments that they brought in!

We had lots of fun learning about Harvest. We talked about the vegetables that we see and made Harvest rings. We also wrote a recipe for harvest oat cakes and used to our recipes to help us make them…..they tasted delicious!!! In our Harvest assembly, we sang beautifully in front of the other boys and girls in Foundation Phase.

We have been busy learning about castles and looking at their different features. In maths, we have been looking at shapes and used our knowledge of 2D shapes to make our own castles. We have also been busy learning numbers to 100 and adding to 20.

We love reading in Dosbarth Evans and reception children have taken reading books home for the first time……. How exciting!!! Both Reception and Year 1 children are trying so hard with their home reading, just as they are with their reading activities in class- Da iawn boys and girls!

We are now looking forward to all the fun activities the next half term will bring in the run up to Christmas! icon_biggrin

Summer Term 2011!

We have had a very busy Summer Term. Our topic this term has been ‘Let’s Discover’ and we have certainly discovered lots of new and exciting things!

Firstly, we learnt about healthy eating. We sorted healthy and unhealthy foods, and created our own healthy lunch boxes. In our role-play area, we wrote healthy shopping lists, and enjoyed doing our shopping and paying for our items. We wrote a recipe for a fruit smoothie and had great fun making our own smoothies by following our recipe! We read the story of ‘Handa’s Surprise’ and learnt lots of fruit names- both in English and Welsh. We also made fruit faces and printed using fruit.

Our topic then took us on a journey to space. We read the story of ‘Whatever Next’. We made the story more interesting by using the musical instruments to add sound effects to the story. We wrote a list of what we would take to space if we were Baby Bear. We looked at pictures of the planets in space and have learnt all their names. We recreated the solar system using the outside area and acted out how the planets orbit the sun. We made our own space pictures using the 2Simple computer program.

We read the story ‘Harry and the bucketful of dinosaurs’. We made our very own dinosaurs with moving parts. We looked at pictures of dinosaurs and fossils. We pretended to be palaeontologists and used our sand tray to search for bones. We carefully brushed the dinosaur bones clean and had to make the dinosaur skeleton.

The children have been very busy preparing for their class assembly. I would like to thank all those who attended. The children have worked very hard this year and they thoroughly enjoyed sharing some of their learning with you.

May I take this opportunity to wish you a relaxing and enjoyable summer! Diolch yn fawr!

Spring term 2

We started the second part of our busy Spring term with our school Eisteddfod. We had a great day cheering on our house teams. We all took part through competitions in class and singing in our teams on the day. Some of us even braved the stage to sing and recite poetry- da iawn pawb! We continued with the Welsh theme throughout the week and learnt about the story of St. David, looked at features and symbols of Wales, such as love spoons, castles, and the Millennium Stadium. We also made delicious leek and potato soup. Some of us liked it so much we even wanted second helpings!

We had a great day celebrating World Book Day. We opted for an animal theme in class and did lots of activities based around this, such as making bookmarks, painting, and reading animal stories in class- We love story time in Dosbarth Evans! We all looked super in our costumes!

For Red Nose Day, we wore “Something Funny For Money”. We had a fun filled day, with lots of activities in class. We cheered on the teachers in their sponsored races and ended the day with a fashion show! We raised a lot of money for such a great cause. Da iawn blant!

We continued our topic of ‘Splish, Splash, Splosh’ by learning about the life cycle of a plant. We learnt that water plays and important part in growing plants. We grew our own broad bean plants and enjoyed watching them grow. Some of them grew very tall indeed!

On March 22nd, it was World Water Day. This fitted in well with our topic and was a perfect opportunity to further develop all that we had learned so far in Dosbarth Evans. We had a great time playing with the water outside too! It was a good job that we came well prepared with our waterproofs!!!

On March 23rd, we had a maths celebration day in Maes yr Haul. We were "Maths Wizards" for the day and solved tricky problems, through lots of fun activities. We also had great fun making Numberjack cookies with Miss Chappell….. Yum Yum!

We showed such interest and enthusiasm when learning about Wales and the features and symbols of our country, that for our class trip, we went to the Millenium Stadium to experience one of the features we had talked about in class first hand. We had a picnic in class beforehand which set us up for our exciting journey to the stadium! We watched a DVD, which showed how the stadium was built and events which have happened there. We then had a fantastic tour of the stadium. Our tour guide was very informative so we learnt lots about the stadium. We saw where the Welsh team get ready then walked through the tunnel- the pitch was huge! We then went up into the seating area and sat where the royalties sit. Oliver was lucky enough to sit in the exact seat where the Queen sat on her visit!!!

We have had a very busy time in class in the weeks leading up to Easter. We learnt about the Easter story and the symbols of Easter. We had great fun making Easter cards, Easter nests and had an Easter egg hunt. Reception had a very busy time practising for their Easter bonnet parade. Our mum’s and dad’s thoroughly enjoyed watching our parade and listening to our songs. We all did a super job of our Easter bonnets- Prince William and Catherine even made an appearance!

After such a busy term, everybody is ready for a well deserved rest over the holidays- both children and staff! I would like to take this opportunity to thank you all for your continued support and to wish you all an egg-cellent Easter! icon_lol

Spring Term 1

We have had a busy half term in Dosbarth Evans! We have started our new topic of "Splish, Splash, Splosh" and have worked hard in class learning about water.

We started our topic with the lovely story of "Rainbow Fish". This book provided us with lots of opportunities to develop our creative skills. We made rainbow fish from coffee filters and saw the colours merge into each other when we added water to them- they look beautiful! We worked together as a team and made Rainbow Fish from different coloured bottle tops. In P.E, we looked at pictures of sea life and made a dance to some water music.

Our next story was "The Drop Goes Plop". This book helped us to learn about the water cycle. We were so clever at remember tricky words such as 'condensation' and 'precipitation'! We had lots of fun with our experiments in class to help us to understand what happens in the water cycle.

We have started the story of "Noah's Ark" in class. Our Living Value this half term is 'Love' so this story fitted in well. We talked about people who are special to us and who we would take onto the ark. We made boxes filled with love in class to give to that special someone!

As well as learning about water, we also had a great day learning about Chinese New Year. In class, we did Chinese writing, made Chinese tangrams and dragon masks. In the afternoon, we finished off with a Chinese meal- Yum Yum! icon_lol

Croeso i Dosbarth Evans!

We have had a very busy term in Dosbarth Evans!

To celebrate Harvest, we had a Harvest Fortnight in class. We read the story of 'Pumpkin Soup' by Helen Cooper. We made pictures from pumpkin seeds, acted out the story in our kitchen role-play area and made our own soup in class- yum!

We looked at signs of Autumn and went on an Autumn walk. We made "Autumn Cocktails" and used our senses to see, touch and smell the Autumn things we had collected. We saw lots of lovely Autumn colours such as red, yellow, brown and orange. We collected things for our class Autumn Box and had great fun making pictures from these.

Our topic this term is 'Once Upon A Time.....' We read the story of Cinderella in class and did lots of activities based on this. We decorated glass slippers, made crowns and learnt how to tell the time- something Cinderella wasn't very good at doing!!!

We have been extremely busy in class in the weeks leading up to Christmas. Our Christmas concert was called 'Whoops a Daisy Angel'. We all looked super in our costumes and our mums, dads and grandparents thoroughly enjoyed our concert! In class, we wrote a letter to Santa and posted them. We can't wait for our replies and we are looking forward to meeting the man himself on our school trip to Poundffald Farm and Brecon Mountain Railway. Let's hope he has seen what good boys and girls we have been! icon_biggrin
