Maes yr Haul's 10th Birthday Celebrations

Birthday Blog written by Rhys Nicholas

We started our special week with some observational drawing of the school. We all picked a bit of the school and drew free hand a place of our choice. On the same day we made timelines of our time in the school, we also brought in some of our memories to school to show.

On Wednesday the One Show hot air balloon came into school.

Image

We stood on the field and watched Clive and his team add heat into the envelope of the balloon because it looked like it was going to fall on us! Then Clive answered some questions and then we went back to class. We made a mind map about the hot air balloon.

Image

On Thursday we made newspapers about the balloon from the day before and some went on the display with the papier mache hot air balloons.

On Friday we had our tenth birthday party and had an unveiling of the new mural.

Llancaiach Fawr

Llancaiach Fawr blog by Ashleigh Brown

On Thursday 15th March our class went on a school trip to Llancaiach Fawr. First of all we met a man who spoke differently to us then he let us go in to Edward Pritchard's house. We went in a part of the house that was called the large kitchen. Inside the large kitchen we met a lady who was dressed up like a maid. She showed us some herbs and told us about the plague which was some sort of disease. She showed us how to make a plague bag, we all made one. After that we all went to another part of the house which was called the small kitchen, she told us about he spit and chose Daniel to do a demonstration, he said it was hard to do it slowly. Later we went to a room called the counting room. It was the same man that we met outside in the garden. He was a bit confusing and nobody could understand what he was saying because he was speaking early English.

After we went in the house we went for our lunch and then tried on some of the Tudor outfits.

We played outside in the courtyard and then we went to the shop, lots of people bought a cup and ball. When we went to the girls bedroom in the house Mrs Garland had a go at the cup and ball and said that it was impossible! The man said that boys were brainier than girls and chose Rhys and Molly to have a try, they both couldn't do it.

We went to a room with Tudor instruments and Aditya and Katie had a turn playing the psaltry and the violin. The man made up a dance for us to do.

Tudor Coats of Arms

The children have enjoyed researching their family coats of arms. They looked at what the different symbols mean on the coat of arms and then painted them for a display in the class.

Swansea Musuem

On Thursday 2nd February classes Garland and Williams went to Swansea Waterfront Museum to participate in a quilting workshop. We looked at quilts which the artist John Uzzel Edwards uses as inspiration for his artwork.

Image

Mary Uzzel Edwards talked to us about the paintings and then explained what we were going to do in our workshop activity.

Image

One of John's paintings is based on a quilt called 'Log Cabins'. Each square on the quilt has a red square in the centre which symbolises the fire in the log cabin. The straight pieces of fabric around the red square are the walls of the cabin with half of the square using colours to represent the night and half representing the day. Everyone created their own square for our class quilt.

Operation Christmas Child

Operation Christmas child

Schools all over the country had wrapped and packed their own boxes full of gifts and toys for people in poor countries; we stuck a boy or girl sticker on the top of the box and ticked the age boxes. Class Garland all collected boxes from all the classes from nursery right up to year 6, we all brought the boxes in to the foyer and counted how many boxes we had, it was amazing how many of the boxes we had, 173. The next day we collected more boxes from the classes then took a box each and loaded the boxes into a van. Some things we put in the boxes were soft toys, finger puppets, toothpaste, tooth brushes, tennis balls, hats, gloves and toy cars. We chose toys or accessories according to their gender. The boxes are taken to a workshop and checked and sent to poor people across the world

Skeletons

Over the term we have been learning about skeletons. The pupils have thoroughly enjoyed finding out about the different types of bones and their scientific names. We did some problem solving activities where we had to make a half sized skeleton by measuring and dividing the measurements.

Techniquest trip

Techniquest Blog
On Wednesday 9th November we went to Techniquest. We went on a bus. We went in to Techniquest to the exhibition and there were lots of things for us to play with. We played with shadow photos, there is one little green button, you press it on the dash board and it will say 5 4 3 2 1 click. It will take the photo and then the wall will have a shadow and it will stay there. The Welsh dragon had 3 switches 1 of the switches moved the head the 2nd switch says wings and the 3rd one says leg. We looked at the hot air balloon and it had to go to 90 °c so that it can go up into the sky. When the bell went ding dong we went to the forces show. We got shown forces. We saw a rocket launcher. Shannon pumped the rocket launcher then the bottle launched in to the sky and landed on the stairs. The man gave us forces card that had forces on that we had to look for. We had to give the card back then we went for lunch and then we came back to school. Techniquest was super brilliant.

Spooky day

On Friday 4th November, we all came in to school in spooky costumes. Some were Draculas, Witches, demons and dead gate keepers.
We had spider biscuits that we made a few days before. We made wanted posters and had a disco.
In the disco we had a spooky catwalk, we did a long walk to the end then did a pose and Mrs Downie took a photo. In the morning we made up new Moshi Monsters.

Cymru am coch

On Friday 21st October the whole school went 'Red for Wales' and celebrated the success of the Welsh rugby team reaching the semi-finals of the rugby world cup. It brought to a close the work that the pupils had been working on in class. We looked at all of the countries invloved and each pupil in the class 'adopted' a country to research.
We spent the morning sharing the power point presentations that the pupils had created and eventually managed to watch the match in the afternoon. (Technology didn't allow us to watch it live)

Diwali Workshop

On Wednesday 19th October the class participated in a Diwali workshop where they made Diva lamps from clay, designed Rangoli patterns on the playground and a variety of other activities to help develop the pupils understanding of the Diwali festival. Following the workshop, Aditya brought in Diwali sweets for everyone to try.

Welcome to year 4

Welcome to a new term and the start of an exciting year ahead.

Sport is playing a significant part in our class this year and as you will all see on Wednesday during the 'Tray and Display' evening the classroom has been taken over by a worldwide sporting theme.

With the Rugby World Cup already in full swing and all of the children 'adopting' a country to support, this term is proving to be an exciting one. I wonder who has adopted Wales?

Following on with the theme of sport, we have the excitement and build up towards the London 2012 Olympics to look forward to.

Autumn Term 2011
Our topic for this term is 'Shake, rattle and heads that roll' and hopefully you have all recieved the newsletter with details of the topics that we will be covering this term. The children are enjoying writing their spooky stories and learning all about skeletons and bones. Just wait until you see our spooky corner!

Wednesday 5th October is our 'Tray and Display' evening where parents and carers are invited to come along to the class, have a look at some of the work that the children have been working on, take a peek inside the classroom and meet me.

I hope to meet many of you during the evening which starts at 3.40pm and finishes and 6.00pm.
See you then!
Mrs Louise Garland

Maths puzzle day

Wednesday 23rd March was 'maths celebration day'. We had loads of fun discovering how our maths skills could help us play games. We used our problem solving skills to create patterns, developed our memory re-call when we went shopping and even had a penguin pile up! Later we developed our problem solving skills and number knowledge. It was definitely a FUN day!

Red nose day

On Friday 18th March 2011 we all did 'something funny for money'. We came to school dressed in silly outfits and brought jokes to share during various 'funny five minutes' sessions during the day. Luckily for me there is no photographic evidence of me WINNING the skipping race. Thanks boys and girls for cheering me on so much! We made red nose biscuits to eat during milk time and helped the school to raise over £500. Da iawn pawb!
