There were many signs that Mount Vesuvuis
was going to erupt. Earthquake activity increased signaling
that the volcano was coming back to life. None of the
Romans saw any of the signs. The winds also changed that
day. If the wind hadn't changed Pompeii wouldn't have been
destroyed, and the lava would have flown into the sea.
Most of
Pompeii's victims were most probably killed by the roof
collapsing. If they were outside the slate roof would have
came off and killed them before the lava did. They were
also killed by the gas, or by choking on ash from the
volcano. Bodies were covered in hot ash and enveloped by
volcanic material. When scientists found the skeletons they
filled the gaps with plaster of paris so people can relive
and see how they looked when the disaster happened.
Pompeii's volcano erupted in 79AD.
